It provides diagnosis and treatment for infants and children with diseases of the urinary tract and kidneys. We care for children who need kidney dialysis and children who need or have had a kidney transplant.
Childhood Nephrotic Syndrome
Nephrotic syndrome is a condition that causes the kidneys to leak large amounts of protein into the urine. This can lead to a range of problems, including swelling of body tissues and a greater chance of catching infections.
Reflux disease
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which the stomach contents leak backward from the stomach into the esophagus (food pipe). Food travels from your mouth to the stomach through your esophagus. GERD can irritate the food pipe and cause heartburn and other symptoms.
PUJ obstruction
The renal pelvis is where the urine collects, to then drain down the ureter into the bladder. Sometimes the connection between the renal pelvis and the ureter is too narrow. This is called a pelvic ureteric junction obstruction (PUJ obstruction). PUJ obstruction is quite rare, affecting only 1 in 1500 children.
